Rowlands Bridge

Rowlands Creek, NSW

A flood-resilient bridge replacement that restores community access while protecting one of Northern New South Wales' most environmentally sensitive waterways.

Rowlands Bridge

Built to withstand future floods while enhancing the health of the creek it crosses.

Following the destruction of the previous crossing during severe flooding, Tweed Shire Council selected an InQuik® Integral Bridge solution that delivers long-term flood resilience, improved environmental outcomes, and reliable access for the local community.

The location

Rowlands Creek is located within the Tweed Shire region of Northern New South Wales, near the boundary of a national park and within a recognized fish habitat area. The surrounding environment supports important aquatic ecosystems and vulnerable native species, making environmental protection a key consideration throughout project planning and delivery.

‍

The crossing provides an important transport link for the local community while traversing a highly sensitive natural setting. Any replacement structure needed to balance access requirements with environmental responsibilities.

Challenges

The previous crossing was destroyed during major flood events, highlighting the need for a more resilient long-term solution. Located within a remote and environmentally sensitive creek corridor, construction methods needed to minimize disturbance to surrounding waterways and habitats.

‍

The site also supports vulnerable species, including the Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon and Giant Barred Frog, requiring careful consideration of ecological connectivity. Delivering a structure capable of withstanding future flood events while protecting environmental values added significant complexity to the project.

How we helped

InQuik delivered a prefabricated integral bridge solution that combined resilience, durability, and environmental sensitivity. The open-span structure eliminates barriers within the watercourse, allowing natural flows and improved fish passage beneath the bridge while reducing impacts on the surrounding ecosystem.

‍

Galvanized permanent formwork, integral abutments, and bored pile foundations create a robust structure designed for a 150-year service life with minimal maintenance requirements. Off-site fabrication and efficient installation methods enabled a local contractor to complete construction quickly while minimizing disruption within the sensitive creek environment.
