A modern two-lane bridge replacement that improves safety, increases capacity, and delivers a low-maintenance crossing for the Southern Downs community.

Delivered for Southern Downs Regional Council, the Bourkes Road Bridge upgrade transformed a narrow single-lane timber structure into a durable two-lane crossing designed to improve traffic flow, increase load capacity, and significantly reduce long-term maintenance requirements.
The project is located on Bourkes Road at Elbow Valley near Killarney in Queensland's Southern Downs region. Situated approximately one hour south of Toowoomba and two hours south-west of Brisbane, the region is known for its rural communities, agricultural activity, and diverse natural landscapes.
The bridge crosses the Condamine River, providing an important connection for local residents, businesses, and agricultural operations. Reliable transport infrastructure is essential to supporting the region's economy and everyday mobility.
The existing bridge was a narrow single-lane timber structure in poor condition that no longer met the needs of the community. Southern Downs Regional Council required a replacement bridge that could improve safety, increase load capacity, and provide a longer service life.
Delivering a cost-effective solution while reducing future maintenance obligations was a key project objective. The new crossing also needed to provide improved resilience against flood events and support the demands of a modern rural road network.
InQuik delivered a 12 x 8.4m integral bridge solution rated to SM1600 loading, providing a robust replacement for the aging timber structure. By integrating the deck and abutments into a single system, the bridge eliminates the need for bearings and tie-downs, reducing future maintenance requirements and improving long-term durability.
The modular construction methodology simplified installation and provided greater cost certainty throughout delivery. The completed bridge now offers a safer, stronger, and more efficient crossing that will serve the Southern Downs community for decades to come.
