CMC Micro Mill Technology Sets New Standard for Sustainable Steel Production

InQuik's U.S. steel partner, CMC, was the first steel company in the world to successfully commercialise micro mill technology, following co-development efforts with equipment manufacturers that began in 2009. The first micro mill operation was established at CMC Steel Arizona in the city of Mesa, creating a new standard for modern steelmaking.

Unlike traditional steel production methods, micro mill technology streamlines steelmaking into a continuous process, building on the already efficient electric arc furnace (EAF) manufacturing model. By reducing production steps and increasing process efficiency, the technology significantly lowers resource consumption while maintaining high-quality steel output.

The environmental benefits are substantial. Micro mill technology reduces energy consumption by approximately 30%, and lowers carbon dioxide emissions from production by around 40% when compared with conventional steel manufacturing processes.
